No long-term contract is a feature, not a generosity

Most marketing companies lock you into 12-month contracts. Here's why that's bad for you, and why we built our business without them.

No long-term contract is a feature, not a generosity — article preview

If you've been in the trades for more than a few years, you've probably been burned by a marketing company. They sold you a package, locked you into a 12-month contract, delivered a website that looked nice but didn't generate leads, and then told you the problem was that you needed to upgrade to the next tier.

We've talked to hundreds of trade business owners who have been through this. The story is always the same. So we decided to build differently.

    Why contracts exist

Long-term contracts exist to protect the vendor, not the customer. If a marketing company has to earn your business every month, they have to deliver every month. If they have you locked in for a year, they can coast.

    That's not a relationship. That's a subscription you can't cancel.

    What no contract actually means

When we say no long-term contract, we mean it. You pay month to month. You can cancel anytime. Your website, your CRM, your customer data — it's all yours. If you leave, we hand it over.

This means we have to be good enough that you choose to stay. Every month. That's the right incentive. If the phone isn't ringing more, if the reviews aren't coming in, if the follow-up isn't happening — you leave, and we've lost a client. That's on us.

What you should ask before signing anything

Before you commit to any marketing or software provider, ask these questions:

    • What's the contract length, and what happens if I want to leave early?
    • Who owns my website if I cancel?
    • Who owns my customer data if I cancel?
    • Is there a setup fee, and what does it cover?
    • What happens to my phone number if I leave?

If the answers to any of those questions involve "you can't" or "we keep that," walk away.

    Our answers

No contract. Month to month. You own your website. You own your data. The setup fee covers the actual work of building your site and setting up your system. You keep your phone number. If you leave, everything goes with you.

We're not worried about you leaving because we're confident you won't want to. And if you do, we haven't earned it. That's the point.
